    Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn invented the communication protocols that we know as the internet.  It was invented as to allow government researchers to share information with one another. The cold war was also a motivator when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik. The government wanted a way to spread information far and wide in the event of a nuclear war. In the 1960s the US launched advanced research projects agency network which would eventually become the internet. The general public did not have access to the network yet, only certain academic and research organizations were given access. The problem was that computers on different networks couldn't communicate with each other but on January 1st 1983 communication protocols transfer control protocols and Internetwork protocol were established. The TCP/IP protocols allowed for computers on different networks to communicate with each other. The advanced research projects agency network changed to the TCP/IP the same day those protocols were established and the internet was born. The world wide web (www) was invented in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee. Then in 1991 he launched the very first website. The internet was also made publicly available that year.

Impact

 

 In the modern day where over 4 billion people have access to the internet you can communicate with people all over the world. It’s given people an unlimited source of information, news, and entertainment. Companies use it to advertise to the masses on twitter, youtube, reddit, facebook. We can use it to keep in touch with distant relatives via facebook. The internet has made shopping easier than ever with Ebay and Amazon. Banking has been made easier with the internet. Applying for jobs has become easier than ever, with Linkedin you can put your application for thousands of recruiters to see. Overall the internet has made several aspects of our lives easier.
